Bitcoin's failure to hold $80,000 has split order-flow data across major exchanges, leaving traders to weigh a short squeeze against a deeper pullback.
Bitcoin held just below $80,000 on Aug. 30 as cumulative volume delta diverged across Binance, Bybit, OKX and Deribit, with shorts building on most venues.
CryptoQuant data shows Binance CVD at $12.6 billion, Bybit at negative $575 million, OKX at negative $125 million and Deribit at positive $425 million, with Binance carrying the heaviest weight given its trading volume.
Taker selling has intensified, with fresh short positions entering the market and existing longs being closed at market price, compounding downward pressure across most venues. Yet the same short build-up can become fuel for a squeeze if price stabilizes.
The $72,000-$74,000 band is the swing point. A fall into that zone would deepen CVD declines; a rebound could force short liquidations and a steep CVD spike. Resistance firms up beyond $85,000.
A $72,000-$74,000 Band Separates the Two Paths
Should Bitcoin fall into that band, CVD metrics are expected to decline further as selling accelerates, marking the correction leg. A rebound from the same zone points to the rally side: if price stabilizes and turns higher from support, shorts built during the decline may face forced liquidation, producing a fast, steep spike in CVD readings as shorts get squeezed out.
Above the market, resistance is expected to firm up beyond $85,000 regardless of which path plays out first. Heavy sellers are anticipated around that zone, and CVD strength would need to peak for any breakout to hold. That ceiling keeps the rally scenario capped even if the squeeze materializes.
September Seasonality Adds Weight to the Correction Case
Trader ᴄʀʏᴘᴛᴏ xʟᴀʀɢᴇ raised a separate point on social media, noting that Bitcoin has never posted a green September immediately after a green August. With August closing in positive territory this year, that historical gap adds another angle to the correction argument.
The trader framed the pattern as a caution rather than a certainty. A historical trend does not guarantee September will decline, but ignoring it at a market extreme carries its own risk. Combined with the current derivatives picture, the seasonal pattern gives the correction scenario extra weight without ruling out a rally.
Neither the CVD data nor the September trend offers a fixed outcome. Both point instead to a battle at $80,000 where volatility in either direction remains on the table. A resolution upward toward $85,000 would likely drag ETH and the broader altcoin complex higher in sympathy, while a break below $72,000 could pressure the wider crypto market and test the pace of spot ETF inflows.
