Cardano's ADA completed six months of CME futures trading on Aug. 9, unlocking a fast-track SEC review for Grayscale's pending spot ETF.
Cardano's ADA crossed a six-month CME futures trading milestone on Aug. 9, making Grayscale's pending spot ETF filing eligible for the SEC's streamlined 75-day review, with a decision possible by Oct. 23.
The timeline stems from the SEC's generic listing standards, approved in September 2025 under Rule 19b-4, which cap review of standard commodity-based ETFs at 75 days once an asset has traded six months on a CFTC-regulated futures venue, crypto analyst Eilert said. CME Group launched ADA futures on Feb. 9, 2026, alongside contracts for Chainlink and Stellar.
Grayscale filed for the Grayscale Cardano Trust ETF (GADA) through NYSE Arca as a Form 19b-4, converting its existing Cardano Trust into a listed fund. The asset manager also raised ADA's allocation in its Smart Contract Fund to 18.33% from 17.96%, trimming Ethereum exposure by 1.06%, according to Atrium Lab data tracked by community member Dave.
Approval is far from guaranteed. The SEC named ADA in its 2023 lawsuits against Coinbase and Binance, arguing the token met the legal test for a security, and that unresolved status hangs over every filing tied to it.
Grayscale's own S-1 risk disclosures warn that a future security classification could force any approved trust to unwind and liquidate, according to reporting from CryptoSlate and Intellectia. Regulators moved toward treating ADA as a digital commodity around mid-March 2026, but no court has settled the question.
The Clarity Act, the market-structure bill that would give digital assets a clearer legal home, passed the House in July 2025 and cleared the Senate Banking Committee in a 15-9 vote in May, then stalled. Senate Majority Leader John Thune confirmed there would be no floor vote before the chamber's Aug. 7 recess, with the next realistic shot around Sept. 14.
ADA traded near $0.1985 as of the Aug. 8 Asian session, up more than 20 percent over seven days, one of the strongest performers among major cryptocurrencies, with a market cap near $7.3 billion. Research from 10x Research showed large holders accumulated more than 240 million ADA within five days, and the token traded above its seven-day and 30-day moving averages.
Bitwise and Canary Capital are also pushing for Cardano ETFs, so late 2026 could see multiple ADA fund launches if the SEC clears the path. Spot ETFs for Bitcoin and Ethereum reshaped how institutional money accessed those assets; a Cardano fund would be the first real test of whether that playbook extends to a token still carrying an open question about its legal status. For traders, Aug. 9 is the starting gun — what the SEC does with the 75 days that follow is what counts, and ADA's price between now and Oct. 23 will likely trade on whether the market believes the filing clears.
