Chainlink launched Chainlink for Agents on Aug. 14, an infrastructure platform giving autonomous AI agents secure blockchain operations as the industry projects 50 billion bots.
"Agent identity, for the agent themselves, is important," Kenneth Shek, chief executive of Animoca Brands' identity project Moca Network, said in an interview. "But our point of view is what's even more important is the human behind the agent."
The platform extends Chainlink's oracle network, which already feeds off-chain data to smart contracts on Ethereum and other chains, into a full agent-operations layer. It follows Cloudflare's Aug. 4 announcement that it will give AI agents their own wallets and permanent identity, and MetaMask's Agent Wallet debut earlier this month, which lets users set daily spending caps and protocol allowlists for their bots.
Yat Siu, Animoca Brands' co-founder, said he runs 280 agents and projects "anywhere from 50 to 100 billion agents minimum" as the rest of the internet catches up. Varun Kabra, chief growth officer at blockchain firm Concordium, said human-to-agent accountability is "the biggest problem I think the world needs to solve for," with agent transactions potentially overtaking human-to-human ones within six to twelve months.
The launch puts Chainlink in direct competition with Google and OpenAI, which are pushing rival agent-commerce protocols, and with Cloudflare, which is building on its own Web Bot Auth rather than W3C credentials. Chainlink's advantage is its existing oracle infrastructure, which already secures billions of dollars in DeFi value across multiple chains.
The identity question is central to the agent economy. Erika Maslauskaite, chief executive and co-founder of European digital-identity startup AlongID, said "behind every agent you would need to verify who's acting. With AI currently, you can fake everything."
Moca Network's answer is the W3C verifiable credential standard, signed attestations a user carries from site to site. Shek said the broader internet has agreed with that standard "from a very long time ago."
Banks have mostly answered by blocking AI agents from customer money. Kabra said the reflex has a reason: "The counterparty on the other side, the airline in this case, or the ticketing platform, whatever it is, they have no way to verify whether a real accountable human is behind the transaction."
The scale of the opportunity is hard to overstate. Shek noted that a human visits 100 to 150 web pages a day, while "one agent could easily visit thousands of pages." He counts current chatbot users in that future: "Some might assume that if you use Claude or ChatGPT, you are not using an agent. Technically you are."
Regulation is moving in the industry's direction. Europe's eIDAS 2.0 requires member states to issue digital identity wallets by the end of 2026, and India's newer data-protection law is the next wave, Shek said.
For Chainlink, the platform could drive demand for LINK as the native utility token, attract developer adoption, and strengthen its competitive moat against other oracle and interoperability protocols. The company has not yet disclosed specific fee structures for the new platform.
