MoonPay on July 29 launched PayBox, a non-custodial payment vault that lets users authorize AI agents inside ChatGPT and Claude to execute token swaps, pay merchants and interact with decentralized finance protocols across eight blockchains.
"The card hid the cash. The phone hid the card. This is the era where money disappears into conversation," Ivan Soto-Wright, chief executive officer and founder of MoonPay, said in a statement. "Billions of AI agents are coming online, and every one of them will need to hold, move, and spend money safely."
PayBox supports Solana, Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Polygon, Hyperliquid, Tempo and Robinhood Chain at launch. Wallet keys are split using threshold cryptography and held inside secure enclaves, meaning neither MoonPay nor the AI agent can sign a transaction alone, according to the company. Card payments run through Visa's agentic commerce framework, with one-time virtual cards scoped to a single merchant and amount. The cryptography has been audited by Trail of Bits and NCC Group, and the product meets PCI DSS security standards, MoonPay said.
The vault uses key management infrastructure from Sodot, which MoonPay acquired in April 2026. Sodot's technology has secured more than $50 billion in transactions and protected over 10 million wallets for clients including eToro, BitGo and Exodus, MoonPay said. Payments to services outside crypto travel over x402, an open standard that uses the HTTP 402 response code to let a server quote a price and a client pay in stablecoins. The x402 network processed 75.41 million transactions worth $24.24 million over the 30 days through late July, averaging about 32 cents per transaction.
Users choose between two policy modes: Always Ask, where every transaction requires a fresh passkey approval, and Autonomous, where the agent acts within preset limits. Changing those limits requires another passkey approval, and access can be revoked at any time. MoonPay said restaurant reservations, travel bookings and shopping at major online retailers are the first integrations working, with more added weekly.
The launch positions MoonPay — which holds a New York limited purpose trust charter granted in November 2025, a BitLicense, state money transmitter licenses and MiCA authorization in the European Union — as a regulated gateway for agent-initiated payments. The company serves more than 30 million customers across 180 countries and supports over 1,700 enterprise clients. Next on its roadmap is support for additional AI platforms and deeper decentralized finance capabilities, letting agents route swaps, trade perpetual futures and manage liquidity under the same user-defined approval rules.
