Olivia Dean's 'Man I Need' tops 1 billion streams after Grammy

Olivia Dean's "Man I Need" surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify, her first track to hit the milestone as the 27-year-old headlines arena tours.

"I met Stevie Wonder the night before [the ceremony] and shook his hand, and he was singing along to 'Man I Need,'" Dean said. "I was just like, OK, that's the only thing I need for the rest of my life."

The track also became her first No. 1 on U.S. pop radio and has spent 52 weeks on the UK Official Singles chart, with 33 of those inside the top 10. Her collaboration with Sam Fender, "Rein Me In," holds the record as the UK's longest-running No. 1 male-female duet at 21 weeks atop the chart, toppling Jay-Z and Rihanna's "Umbrella."

Dean's sophomore album "The Art of Loving" propelled her from 3,000-capacity venues to 20,000-seat arenas in under a year. She plays four nights at Madison Square Garden this month, capping a rise that began as a backing vocalist for Rudimental in 2017.

Dean's commercial breakthrough extends beyond streaming. Her album held the No. 1 spot in New Zealand for more than 22 weeks, breaking a record previously held by ABBA. "But that's Abba!" she said.

The singer-songwriter, who attended the BRIT School alongside alumni Adele and Amy Winehouse, released three EPs and a live album before her debut full-length in 2023. Her sophomore album arrived last September, with the single "Nice to Each Other" becoming her first top-five hit in the UK.

"Man I Need" debuted on the UK Official Singles chart at No. 8 last August, spent a month at No. 2, and climbed to No. 1 in mid-September. The track has now logged 52 weeks on the chart, with 33 inside the top 10. It also surpassed 200 million streams on Spotify as her second and fastest track to reach that milestone.

Dean currently fills four spaces on the Official Singles chart. "Rein Me In" has accumulated 61 weeks on the chart with 21 frames at No. 1, "So Easy (To Fall in Love)" is at 45 weeks, and "Baby Steps" has logged nine weeks.

The Grammy win in February capped a year of rapid ascent. Dean performed "Man I Need" at the ceremony and accepted Best New Artist with a speech honoring her immigrant grandmother. "I'm up here as the granddaughter of an immigrant," she said. "I'm a product of bravery."

The streaming milestone and chart records point to sustained commercial momentum for Dean as she enters the arena-tour phase of her career. Her four-night run at Madison Square Garden will test whether her cross-generational appeal translates to the largest U.S. venues.
