Uniswap governance activated a protocol fee switch on v4 liquidity pools on July 31, routing collected fees toward UNI and reviving the token's burn mechanics.
"Protocol fees are additive to the existing fee structure rather than deducted from LP allocations," Hayden Adams, founder of Uniswap, said in an X post, rejecting criticism that the change cuts liquidity provider earnings.
UNI on Ethereum climbed as high as $4.06 intraday before easing to about $3.97, up roughly 3.7 percent from its daily open and about 8.5 percent above the July 29 low of $3.74, CoinGecko data shows. The move extended a recovery from the June low near $2.35 of more than 70 percent. Uniswap holds about $3.06 billion in total value locked, making it the largest decentralized exchange by TVL, according to DefiLlama.
The activation follows governance proposals that route protocol revenue into the existing UNI burn mechanism, creating a direct link between trading activity and token supply. A recent TokenJar buyback-and-burn transaction worth approximately $2.2 million marked the largest such event since late 2025. Uniswap generated about $5.2 million in fees during a 24-hour period earlier this month, with Robinhood Chain contributing roughly $4.4 million of that total, DefiLlama data shows.
Fee Stack Dispute
Adams used a 30-basis-point pool as his reference case, arguing a 5-basis-point protocol fee represents about 14 percent of total swap fees, not a reduction in LP earnings. Critics point to Uniswap's own v4 documentation, which describes protocol and LP fees as applied sequentially, protocol fee first, then LP fee on the remaining input. Under that structure, any positive protocol fee narrows the base on which LP fees are calculated. The 14 percent figure has not been independently verified.
Burn Mechanics and Price Levels
Governance proposals covering protocol fees from v4 pools and deployments on Robinhood Chain would, if approved, route revenue into TokenJar smart contracts designed to buy back and burn UNI from the open market. Uniswap surpassed $1 billion in trading volume on Robinhood Chain within nine days of launch. The Average Directional Index has climbed to around 38, indicating a strengthening trend, with bulls defending the $3.85 to $3.71 support band. Immediate resistance sits at $4.05 to $4.10; a decisive daily close above that region could open a path toward the May swing highs near $4.30.
Whether UNI sustains a move above $4 will depend on continued progress on the fee proposals and broader risk appetite, after the Federal Reserve held rates at 3.50 percent to 3.75 percent with three committee members favoring a 25-basis-point increase. Governance votes to extend v4 protocol fees to additional deployments are expected to continue, meaning the dispute over LP impact will likely resolve on performance data as it accumulates.
