Bitcoin's quantum risk discount could vanish overnight with a clear developer roadmap, Capriole Investments founder says.
Bitcoin is trading 49% below its all-time high of $126,100, and roughly 30% of that gap reflects uncertainty over quantum computing, according to Charles Edwards, founder of Capriole Investments. A credible roadmap from Bitcoin developers to address the threat could push the price up by double digits "very quickly," he said.
"Double digits probably," Edwards said in an interview on Cointelegraph's Trade Secrets. "If the Bitcoin core team says in two or three months: 'this is our roadmap, we're gonna solve it in the next two years, these are the rough steps we'll take,' that would be amazing news. I think that would discount a lot of the risk pretty much overnight."
Edwards estimates Bitcoin's fair value based on energy cost at roughly 40% above the current price of $65,270, with quantum risk accounting for about 30% of the discount. The remaining gap reflects broader macro uncertainty, he said. His timeline for "Q-Day" — when quantum computers could reverse-engineer private keys from public keys — sits in the four-to-five-year range, based on projections from Google researchers and other quantum computing firms.
The stakes are asymmetric. Even a 2% probability of a catastrophic event justifies preparation when the potential loss is trillions of dollars, Oxford quantum computing lecturer Stefano Gogioso said during a recent BeInCrypto panel. Google has set an internal 2029 target to move its own products onto quantum-resistant encryption, and the Ethereum Foundation has published a formal post-quantum roadmap with completion expected by 2029. Bitcoin has no equivalent plan.
Why the quantum discount persists
Bitcoin's governance structure is the bottleneck. Unlike Ethereum, where Vitalik Buterin has urged migration within roughly four years, Bitcoin has no central authority to coordinate a protocol upgrade. BIP-360, a proposal for quantum-resistant signatures, exists but has not advanced to implementation. Its author, Ethan Heilman, estimates a solution could take years to develop and deploy.
"The question isn't 'will it be 2030?' It's what's the probability of a tail event by 2030, and how much would we lose," Gogioso said. "Even at 2%, the impact on Bitcoin and crypto, if we're not prepared, is essentially most of crypto going to zero."
Coinbase formed an Independent Advisory Board on Quantum Computing and Blockchain earlier this year and plans to deliver a post-quantum signing pipeline within 12 months. The exchange is also a founding member of the Bitcoin Security Consortium alongside BlackRock, Fidelity Digital Assets and Block, which funds open-source work on proposals like BIP-360. BlackRock has flagged quantum computing as a potential long-term risk in materials for its spot Bitcoin ETF.
What a roadmap would change
Edwards said the risk is already priced in at current levels, meaning the downside from known information is limited. The upside, however, could be substantial if developers signal a credible path forward.
"That risk again falls significantly if there's a solution or if there's a roadmap to a solution," he said. "But it also could grow if tomorrow we find out that Google is twice as far ahead on their roadmap to Q-Day."
For now, Bitcoin's lack of a formal quantum strategy keeps a lid on valuation. A single announcement from core developers outlining a timeline and technical approach could remove that ceiling, Edwards said.
