World Liberty Financial hired Ryan Ballantyne, a former Coinbase Institutional executive, as chief business officer to lead global strategy and partnerships, the Trump-linked DeFi project said.
Ballantyne, who most recently led corporate client strategy at Coinbase Institutional, will oversee WLFI's global business strategy and partnership expansion, according to a report from The Block. His mandate centers on broadening USD1 stablecoin use cases across centralized exchanges, DeFi protocols, real-world asset platforms, and corporate and institutional partners.
USD1 carries a market capitalization of $4 billion, while WLFI's governance token on Ethereum is valued at $1.74 billion, according to market data. The project, launched in late 2024, aims to build a suite of DeFi products including lending and borrowing services with an emphasis on regulatory compliance.
The appointment comes as WLFI seeks to differentiate itself in a crowded DeFi market and build credibility with traditional finance. The project is exploring institutional treasury solutions and potentially seeking a national banking charter, according to reports. However, the Trump family's involvement and revenue-sharing structure raise governance and political concerns that could complicate its institutional ambitions.
WLFI, which operates on Ethereum, has attracted both attention and scrutiny because of its ties to President Donald Trump and his family, who have promoted it publicly. The project's governance structure concentrates control within the Trump family, drawing criticism from DeFi observers. The token's governance model differs from typical DAO structures, where voting power is distributed across a broader holder base.
Ballantyne's background in institutional client relations could help the project forge partnerships with banks, asset managers, and other financial entities, potentially bridging the gap between traditional finance and decentralized protocols. His move to WLFI follows a broader trend of DeFi projects recruiting executives from established financial institutions to gain legitimacy and navigate regulatory challenges. Coinbase, where Ballantyne spent years serving institutional clients, has itself expanded into tokenization and institutional custody, competing in the same regulatory-friendly DeFi space WLFI is targeting.
The stablecoin market remains dominated by Tether's USDT and Circle's USDC, which together control the vast majority of the sector. USD1's $4 billion market cap places it among the smaller entrants, though its political connections and institutional focus could help it carve out a niche in treasury management and real-world asset tokenization.
Observers will be watching whether WLFI can translate high-profile hires into tangible product adoption and whether its political associations will help or hinder its progress. The coming months will reveal how effectively the project uses this appointment to advance its goals.
