Pi Network set an Aug. 11 deadline for Mainnet node operators to upgrade to Protocol 26; those who miss it lose network connectivity until the update is completed.
The Pi Core Team announced the rollout in a post on X on Wednesday, saying all Mainnet node operators must complete the upgrade before the deadline to remain connected to the network. "Protocol 26 is a major milestone ahead of the final planned upgrade, Protocol 27," the team said.
Protocol 26 is the ninth successful protocol upgrade completed over the past several months, following Protocol 25 which introduced BN254 cryptography and Poseidon hashing for zero-knowledge application development. The update primarily involves internal data migrations with expected downtime of less than five minutes for most operators, according to the Core Team's documentation.
The upgrade deadline comes as Pi Network continues expanding its Mainnet infrastructure through sequential protocol updates. Protocol 27, the final planned upgrade in the current sequence, has appeared on the roadmap, though the Core Team has instructed operators not to begin that upgrade until further notice.
The mandatory upgrade applies to Mainnet node operators running desktop software, Linux CLI, or self-managed Docker setups. Nodes running outdated software will no longer remain synchronized once Protocol 26 becomes mandatory, per Pi's developer documentation. The full upgrade sequence runs from Protocol 19.1 through 27.0, with nodes required to complete each step in order.
Unlike Bitcoin's Proof-of-Work model, Pi Network uses the Stellar Consensus Protocol, where nodes reach consensus through trusted quorum slices. The ecosystem supports three participation levels: desktop app users, Mainnet nodes, and SuperNodes.
The upgrade follows Pi2Day 2026 in June, when Pi Network launched three products — PiVerify, SoloHost, and Pi Sign-in — representing the project's most concrete push toward building an external ecosystem. PiVerify has processed more than 18 million identity verifications across 200 countries, while SoloHost allows developers to run applications across 420,000 existing node operators. All three products require a stable Mainnet protocol to function at scale.
The Core Team's guidance warns operators running multiple nodes not to upgrade all simultaneously, as simultaneous downtime creates gaps in network services. Operators should divert traffic to other nodes or the official endpoint during each upgrade window and upgrade sequentially.
The August 11 deadline is the second hard upgrade cutoff Pi Network has imposed this year, following the June 18 Protocol 25 deadline. The sequential upgrade program reflects the project's methodical approach to strengthening infrastructure ahead of broader Mainnet application development, including a planned Launchpad and DEX feature that builds on liquidity pool mechanics tested on Testnet.
