Apple removed Telegram from its App Store on Aug 3 over child sexual abuse material violations, cutting off new iOS downloads and updates for the messaging platform that anchors the TON blockchain ecosystem.

Apple said in a statement shared by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman that the app was "briefly removed" after the company found content violating its strict guidelines on child sexual abuse material. "The app was subsequently restored after the developer promptly removed the content and banned the user who posted it," Apple said.

The removal blocks new installs and freezes updates for iOS users, though existing installations continue to function. Telegram's web interface, desktop apps for macOS and Windows, and Android version remain accessible, as does the Mac App Store listing. GRAM, the digital asset linked to the Telegram ecosystem, registered a modest decline as news of the delisting spread across social channels. Users who delete the app from their iPhones will be unable to re-download it until Apple restores the listing.

The episode raises fresh questions about the TON ecosystem's reliance on centralized app stores for distribution. With Telegram serving as the primary gateway for TON-based applications and token communities, a prolonged removal could slow network adoption and pressure token sentiment, even as existing users retain access.

TON's Distribution Dependency

Telegram's role extends beyond messaging. The platform hosts the TON blockchain's primary user-facing applications, including wallets, mini-apps, and trading bots. The Open Network's growth has been closely tied to Telegram's user base, making the App Store removal a potential bottleneck for new user onboarding on iOS devices.

GRAM, formerly known as TON, saw short-term price declines as news of the delisting spread. Digital assets linked to the Telegram ecosystem registered dips across social channels, reflecting near-term uncertainty even though existing installations remain fully functional.

This is not the first time Telegram has faced removal from Apple's platform. In 2018, Apple temporarily pulled Telegram worldwide after identifying inappropriate content, with founder Pavel Durov later saying the company introduced additional safeguards before reinstatement. In 2024, Apple removed Telegram from the Chinese App Store alongside WhatsApp, Signal, and Threads at the request of China's internet regulator.

Telegram has also faced government-imposed restrictions. Brazilian authorities suspended the platform in 2023 after the company failed to provide information in an investigation into groups accused of encouraging school violence. In India, authorities have scrutinized Telegram over alleged misuse, with the Centre telling the Delhi High Court that the platform had become the "new dark web" for cybercriminal activity. Indian users can still download Telegram on their iPhones, as the country was not among those affected by the latest removal.

The removal highlights the structural vulnerability of crypto ecosystems that depend on centralized distribution channels. For TON, the path forward may require diversifying user acquisition beyond the App Store, though no timeline for such a shift has been announced. Apple has restored the app, but the episode shows that platform-level enforcement can disrupt even the most deeply integrated blockchain networks.
