Bottomline, a top-three SWIFT provider processing $16 trillion annually, has partnered with Chainlink to bring cross-border and cross-chain payments onchain for more than 600 client banks.
The partnership, announced Thursday, integrates Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) and Chainlink Runtime Environment (CRE) as an orchestration and interoperability layer for Bottomline's institutional payment network, according to Chainlink's official announcement.
Banks on Bottomline's platform will connect to public and permissioned blockchain networks through the ISO 20022 financial messaging standard without modifying their core operating systems. The architecture targets common settlement friction points, including delays and manual reconciliation processes that have historically slowed cross-border transactions.
The deployment places Chainlink's infrastructure directly inside one of the largest payment networks in global banking, positioning CCIP as a settlement standard for tokenized cross-border transactions. The next phase calls for rolling out pilot flows between financial institutions connected to Bottomline's network.
Chainlink operates as a decentralized oracle network that supplies off-chain data to blockchain applications and provides cross-chain messaging through CCIP. The protocol has become a reference point for blockchain interoperability in institutional settings, with its data feeds powering price discovery across major DeFi platforms on Ethereum and other networks.
The partnership extends Chainlink's institutional footprint beyond existing integrations. Coinbase selected Chainlink as its oracle infrastructure for tokenized stocks on Base, while Animoca-backed NUVA tapped Chainlink as exclusive data provider for institutional real-world assets. Nethermind also migrated its verifier operations from LayerZero to Chainlink after a security review.
For Bottomline, the move reflects a broader shift among SWIFT-aligned payment providers exploring blockchain rails for settlement efficiency. The ISO 20022 standard, already adopted across much of the global banking messaging infrastructure, provides a common language that bridges traditional financial messaging with blockchain-based settlement.
Chainlink's CCIP competes with LayerZero and Axelar for cross-chain interoperability market share in institutional deployments. The Bottomline integration gives CCIP a direct channel into the SWIFT ecosystem, where the majority of global cross-border payment messaging originates.
The pilot phase will determine how quickly the integration scales across Bottomline's network. If successful, the deployment could establish a template for other SWIFT service providers seeking to connect their banking clients to blockchain settlement infrastructure.
