DoorDash is transforming from a food delivery app into a broad local commerce platform, adding more than 9,000 physical store locations through two partnerships announced in the past two months.
DoorDash expanded its merchant network by more than 9,000 physical stores through partnerships with Shopify and Dollar Tree, pushing beyond restaurant delivery into retail and omnichannel commerce. The company's Marketplace gross order value rose 37% to $31.6 billion in the first quarter, while total orders climbed 27% to 933 million.
"This integration eliminates manual onboarding and separate catalog management, allowing merchants to reach millions of DoorDash customers while leveraging our nationwide delivery network," a DoorDash spokesperson said of the Shopify deal.
The Shopify integration, announced in July, lets US merchants with physical stores sell products on the DoorDash Marketplace with automated catalog syncing and inventory management. The Dollar Tree partnership, announced in May, added on-demand delivery from more than 9,000 stores across 48 states, offering access to over 10,000 products. Merchants can activate the service directly from Shopify without separate catalog management.
The expansion positions DoorDash to capture a larger share of the $1.2 trillion US local commerce market, but comes as the company invests heavily in unifying its technology platform with Wolt and Deliveroo — spending that contributed to a 23% expected decline in Q2 earnings per share to $0.50. The company forecasts Marketplace GOV of $32.4 billion to $33.4 billion for the second quarter, with revenue expected to reach $4.32 billion, up 31.5% from a year earlier.
The Shopify partnership targets independent retailers and omnichannel businesses that lack their own delivery infrastructure. Shopify merchants with physical stores can now list products on DoorDash's marketplace, synchronizing inventory in real time. For Shopify, whose stock rose 2.41% to CA$177.40 on the news, the deal adds a delivery layer to its commerce operating system. The Ottawa-based company, valued at CA$224.79 billion, trades at 118.7 times earnings — a premium that reflects expectations for continued platform expansion.
The Dollar Tree partnership gives DoorDash access to a price-sensitive customer base that overlaps minimally with its core restaurant audience. With more than 9,000 locations across 48 states, Dollar Tree becomes one of DoorDash's largest retail partners by store count. The deal helps Dollar Tree strengthen its omnichannel strategy while giving DoorDash a foothold in the discount retail segment, where same-day delivery options remain limited.
DoorDash shares have fallen 18.7% year to date, underperforming the broader tech sector's 11.8% gain, as investors weigh near-term margin pressure against long-term platform expansion. The company faces intense competition from Uber Eats and Grubhub, as well as retailers building their own delivery capabilities. The Shopify and Dollar Tree partnerships broaden DoorDash's total addressable market beyond food delivery, but the payoff depends on whether the company can convert retail partnerships into profitable order volume while managing the cost of its multiyear technology integration.
