Optical communication stocks surged at the July 21 open, with Coherent and Marvell Technology each gaining nearly 7%.
The rally coincided with continued expectations for AI infrastructure spending, which drives demand for high-speed optical components used in data center interconnects, traders said. Coherent, a maker of lasers and photonic components, has been a direct beneficiary of the AI buildout alongside Marvell, whose networking chips power cloud infrastructure at major hyperscalers.
Lumentum Holdings rose more than 6%, Credo Technology Group and Ciena Corp. each added over 5%, and Corning Inc., a supplier of optical fiber and specialty glass, advanced more than 3%. The group's synchronized move suggests a sector-wide driver rather than company-specific news, with all six stocks moving in tandem within the first hour of trading.
The broader market showed mixed action. The S&P 500 closed the prior session at 7,445, down 0.17%, while the Nasdaq Composite finished at 25,508, down 0.05%. Trading volume in the sector was elevated as investors rotated into optical and networking names, with the group outperforming the broader technology sector.
The rally shows the market's conviction that AI-driven demand for bandwidth will sustain growth across the optical supply chain. Coherent and Lumentum are scheduled to report quarterly results in the coming weeks, which will provide further clarity on order momentum and backlog trends.
