"After years of building bitcoin businesses, I'm shifting upstream to the power infrastructure now constraining both mining and AI compute," Matt Prusak, former president of American Bitcoin, said in emailed comments.
Prusak's move to Giga Energy as chief business officer and interim CFO, effective Aug. 4, is among the most visible examples of the talent drain. Houston-based Giga Energy has delivered more than 6.5 gigawatts of power infrastructure and is developing 500 megawatts of AI-ready data center capacity. American Bitcoin, the Nasdaq-listed miner backed by Hut 8 and co-founded with Eric Trump, has not named a successor.
The pivot carries systemic implications. As miners repurpose power contracts and cooling systems for AI workloads, Bitcoin's hashrate — the computational power securing the network — is declining. Lower hashrate reduces the cost of a 51% attack, while advances in quantum computing threaten the cryptographic foundations of the network.
The 2024 Bitcoin halving cut block rewards in half, squeezing miner margins at a time when energy costs were rising. Miners that once competed for hashrate now face a choice: continue mining at thinner margins or redirect their power capacity to AI data centers, where hyperscalers are paying premium rates for compute.
Core Scientific and IREN have signed significant contracts with AI firms, and Hut 8 has been exploring AI-related opportunities. The trend has accelerated as investors reward miners with AI exposure through higher stock valuations compared to pure-play Bitcoin miners.
The security implications are measurable. A declining hashrate lowers the computational cost required to execute a 51% attack, where an entity controlling more than half the network's mining power can reverse transactions or double-spend coins. Quantum computing adds a second vector: sufficiently powerful quantum machines could theoretically break the elliptic curve cryptography securing Bitcoin wallets.
Prusak's transition reflects a broader executive migration. Mining firms possess large-scale power contracts, cooling systems, and operational expertise in managing energy-intensive facilities — assets directly transferable to AI data centers. Infrastructure companies are recruiting talent with deep experience in digital assets as access to reliable power becomes the biggest constraint on expanding compute capacity.
For American Bitcoin, the leadership change raises questions about strategic direction and continuity. The company's bitcoin accumulation strategy, which focused on expanding hashrate while increasing BTC holdings per share, now faces an uncertain path as its president departs for the AI sector.
The convergence of mining and AI is not a passing trend. Mining firms hold power contracts and operational expertise that are directly transferable to AI data centers, and this crossover has produced a wave of partnerships, acquisitions, and executive moves between the two sectors. As both industries continue to intersect, leadership changes like Prusak's are likely to become more common, reflecting a strategic realignment toward diversified, energy-efficient computing.
