Bitcoin pushed past $81,000 in Tuesday’s Asian trading session, its highest level since late January, as a surge in spot buying met a wave of profit-taking at a critical technical juncture.
"High profit-taking in a rising market may indicate that buyers have taken advantage of the supply," Santiment, an on-chain analytics firm, said in a report. The firm noted that Bitcoin "demonstrated active demand during the move as it surpassed $80K while holders locked in gains."
The brief surge above $81,000 triggered a cycle-high of $207.56 million in net realized profits as coins purchased at lower levels were sold. Data also showed the Spent Output Profit Ratio (SOPR) rising to levels that have historically preceded local tops. Spot Cumulative Volume Delta (CVD) surged 199.1% in the week before the move, indicating strong spot buying absorbed the selling pressure.
The move sets up a critical test for Bitcoin, with bulls needing to convert the $81,000-$83,000 zone from resistance into support for a chance to target the next liquidity cluster near $89,000. Failure to hold gains would bring the $73,000-$75,000 demand zone back into focus.
Bulls and Bears Clash at Critical Resistance
The rally to $81,000 was driven by renewed institutional demand, with spot Bitcoin ETFs from firms like BlackRock and Fidelity seeing a return of positive net inflows. This structural bid, which was absent in previous cycles, has helped absorb selling pressure from long-term holders.
However, some analysts are calling for a local top. "Bitcoin is very close to a local top," crypto analyst Kaz said in a post on X, predicting a rejection between $80,000 and $82,000 before a potential drop toward the $56,000 level. This bearish view is supported by the significant profit-taking and historical resistance in the current price range.
The broader crypto market saw a mixed reaction. Ethereum moved higher in correlation with Bitcoin, but performance among smaller altcoins was uneven, suggesting investor capital remains concentrated on the market leader for now.
A confirmed breakout would require a weekly close above $81,000 on high volume, which could clear the path toward the $86,000–$89,000 range. Conversely, a rejection here could see a retracement to establish a new, higher low before the next leg up.
