Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson issued a stark warning that the blockchain’s foundational research ecosystem is on the verge of collapse, a crisis sparked by a contentious funding vote within its decentralized governance system. The potential dismantling threatens to unravel a decade of scientific development that underpins the network’s brand and future.
"If this proposal does not pass, we want the entire Japanese community to fully recognize that Cardano will lose its scientists, and our lab will be forced to close," Hoskinson said in a translated message to the community on X.
The controversy stems from a decision by several Japanese Delegate Representatives (dReps) to vote against a critical funding proposal for the network's research and development. Hoskinson claims this rejection would have catastrophic consequences for Cardano's academic and development operations, which he describes as the "entire core of our ecosystem." Cardano's ADA token was trading at $0.25 as of May 21, 2026, with a market capitalization of $9.04 billion, according to Forbes data.
At stake is Cardano's identity as the "science coin," a reputation Hoskinson says was earned through hundreds of millions of dollars in investment and a decade of work to build a premier academic group. "Cardano is the science coin. That's our brand," he stated, arguing that the ecosystem's scientific foundation is not a personal project but the very essence of the network. The potential loss of scientists to competitors would shatter this achievement over "piecemeal funding support."
The situation highlights a fundamental tension in decentralized governance, with some community members arguing that leadership cannot champion full decentralization and then complain when voting outcomes are not to their liking. Hoskinson countered that this issue transcends personal grievances, framing it as a threat to the project's core identity. In response, he has urged network participants to delegate their tokens to dReps who explicitly support Cardano's long-term research agenda, putting the future of its scientific pursuits directly in the hands of its token holders.
