Cardano's first onchain-governed hard fork activated July 19, pushing ADA toward a test of the $0.168 resistance that has capped gains twice this month.
Cardano rose 0.55 percent to $0.165 on July 19 after activating the Van Rossem hard fork, the network's first upgrade approved entirely through onchain governance.
"The V11 hard fork has officially gone live on the Cardano mainnet, marking the first upgrade that DReps were able to vote on alongside SPOs and the Constitutional Committee," Intersect, the Cardano membership organization, said in a statement.
The upgrade introduces optimizations to the Plutus smart contract platform and adjustments to the cost model governing transaction fees, according to Intersect. It also lays the foundation for the Dijkstra era hard fork, which will introduce the Ouroboros Leios scaling protocol. Cardano explorer cexplorer confirmed the activation went smoothly.
ADA's 1-hour chart printed a golden cross — the 50-period moving average crossing above the 200-period moving average — coinciding with the upgrade. The token now faces resistance at the daily MA50 of $0.168, a level it failed to break twice in July. A move above that opens a path to the daily MA200 at $0.256, while support sits near $0.13.
Onchain Governance Milestone
The Van Rossem upgrade, also designated Protocol Version 11, includes enhanced Plutus primitives, VRF key uniqueness checks, and updated reference input rules, according to the protocol's technical documentation. The cost model changes aim to make transaction fees more predictable for developers building decentralized applications on Cardano.
The hard fork's approval mechanism marks a governance milestone. Delegated Representatives participated in the vote alongside stake pool operators and the Constitutional Committee, making it the first upgrade to pass through the full onchain governance framework established by the CIP-1694 proposal. Bitcoin's dominance, which has hovered near 55 percent in recent weeks, continues to pressure altcoin performance broadly, with ADA's muted price reaction reflecting that macro headwind. Ethereum's ongoing transition toward its own scalability upgrades adds further competition among Layer-1 platforms vying for developer mindshare.
Resistance Test Ahead
ADA's price action remains range-bound despite the bullish technical signal. The token has traded below the daily MA50 since early July, with two failed breakout attempts at $0.168. Trading volume has not shown a significant increase following the upgrade, suggesting traders are waiting for a confirmed break above resistance before committing capital.
The next major catalyst for Cardano is the Dijkstra era hard fork, which will implement Ouroboros Leios, a protocol designed to increase throughput by parallelizing block production. No date has been set for that upgrade. For now, ADA's path depends on whether buyers can push through the $0.168 level — a failure to do so could see the token retest support near $0.13, a level that has held since June.
