CSPC Pharmaceutical Group signed a deal with AstraZeneca worth up to $1.77 billion to co-develop siRNA drugs for renal diseases using CSPC's proprietary delivery platforms.

CSPC Pharmaceutical Group struck a deal with AstraZeneca worth up to $1.77 billion to co-develop siRNA drugs for kidney diseases.
"The collaboration leverages our proprietary siRNA discovery and extrahepatic targeted delivery platforms to address renal diseases with significant unmet need," CSPC Pharmaceutical Group said in a statement.
Under the agreement, CSPC will receive an upfront payment of $30 million and is eligible for up to $1.74 billion in development, regulatory and commercial milestone payments, plus single-digit royalties on net sales. The partners will jointly discover and develop preclinical candidates for two targets across multiple renal disease indications. AstraZeneca holds options to obtain exclusive global or ex-China rights for each program, while CSPC retains rights to develop, manufacture and commercialize one candidate in China.
The deal validates CSPC's push into RNA therapeutics and strengthens its position as an emerging innovation partner in the biopharmaceutical sector. Shares of CSPC Pharmaceutical Group surged 8.3% on the Hong Kong exchange Thursday, with short-selling volume reaching HK$356.8 million, or 27.5% of turnover. The stock has a market capitalization of about HK$80.2 billion and trades at a consensus analyst price target of HK$13.05, according to TipRanks data.
The siRNA market has attracted major pharmaceutical companies seeking new drug modalities beyond traditional small molecules and antibodies. AstraZeneca's commitment to CSPC's platform signals growing interest in extrahepatic delivery technologies that could expand RNA therapeutics beyond liver diseases. Investors will watch for the selection of preclinical candidates and any subsequent option exercises by AstraZeneca as the next catalysts for the partnership.
