The conflict introduces a significant geopolitical risk premium to a market already grappling with component shortages and soaring demand, threatening to disrupt the intricate network that produces the world’s most advanced chips.
"The pressure we're feeling right now is on the computing front and also from the supply chain," Steve Monk, the manager of Sandia National Laboratories' high-performance computing team, said in a recent interview. "Looking to the future, it's a bit stressful in terms of our ability to deliver to the mission."
The market has shown signs of strain, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite pulling back from recent record highs. The index traded down approximately one percent on Monday, May 18, following a sharp 1.54 percent sell-off the preceding Friday. The downturn was led by the chipmakers powering the AI boom, with Nvidia falling 2.92 percent and Intel declining around five percent. The concerns are twofold: a prolonged conflict could disrupt key shipping routes and raw material access, while rising oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty could dampen investor appetite for high-growth tech stocks.
For investors, the war serves as the first major geopolitical test of the sky-high valuations in the AI sector. The market's direction now hinges on whether the structural demand for AI infrastructure, which has propelled stocks to record levels, can outweigh the cyclical headwinds of war. All eyes are turning to Nvidia's quarterly earnings report on Wednesday, May 20, which will serve as a critical barometer for the entire industry's health.
The AI gold rush has had unintended consequences for some of the most demanding chip consumers. At Sandia National Laboratories, one of three US labs tasked with maintaining the nation's nuclear weapons arsenal, supercomputers require chips capable of high-precision scientific work. This involves what is known as double-precision floating-point computation, a feature that is less critical for mainstream AI applications.
As major firms like Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices pivot their designs toward AI workloads, the availability of chips for specialized scientific simulation is becoming a source of stress for labs like Sandia. "The double-precision performance of Nvidia's forthcoming Rubin chips has declined by some measures, worrying many scientists in the high-performance computing industry," said Ian Cutress, chief analyst at chip consulting firm More Than Moore.
This market shift has prompted Sandia to test products from smaller players. The lab is now evaluating chips from NextSilicon, an Israeli startup, whose hardware uses a different "data flow" architecture. These chips excel at double-precision computing and are designed to be more power-efficient. After passing a key technical milestone, NextSilicon's chips are now being considered for more demanding problems that simulate nuclear security work, with a decision expected this fall.
While Sandia's challenges highlight long-term supply chain strategy, investors are focused on the immediate term. Nvidia's earnings on Wednesday are seen as the single most important event for the Nasdaq this week. The company has been the largest single contributor to US earnings growth in 2026, and its results are a real-time indicator of the global AI infrastructure spending cycle.
"Consensus expectations entering the report are extraordinarily high," wrote Fabrice Beaux, a technology analyst at BBN Times. "Any miss on revenue, gross margins, or forward guidance would likely trigger an outsized sell-off not just in Nvidia but across the entire semiconductor and AI ecosystem."
Adding to the uncertainty is an emerging labor dispute at Samsung Electronics, the world's largest producer of the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) essential for AI servers. Any disruption to production at Samsung's Korean facilities could create immediate bottlenecks, pushing memory prices higher and constraining the build-out of AI data centers. Shares of Seagate Technology, which uses Samsung components, fell approximately seven percent on Monday, illustrating the market's sensitivity to any new supply chain threats.
