JIMOTHY, a Solana meme coin named after a viral Seattle raccoon, rose 186% to a market cap near $11 million in 24 hours, BeInCrypto data shows.
"The raccoon likely has short spine syndrome, a rare congenital condition that shortens the spine and limits mobility," Marcie Logsdon, an associate professor at Washington State University's Veterinary Teaching Hospital, said. "I was surprised and honestly a little bit inspired that he is that resilient."
Anonymous developers launched JIMOTHY on July 16 on Pump.fun, a Solana-based token issuance platform, as clips of the raccoon's unusual shape spread across social media. The token's 24-hour trading volume topped $36 million, and its price climbed more than 50-fold from its low to an all-time high of $0.0217, according to live rankings data. About 1 billion tokens are in circulation, and the token trades mainly on Solana-based decentralized exchanges including PumpSwap, Meteora and Raydium.
The token still ranks 1,117th by market capitalization, tiny next to Solana's blue-chip names. However, tokens built on viral animal moments rarely hold their gains once the news cycle fades, a pattern that played out this year in meme coin rallies tied to footballer Erling Haaland and Pentagon UFO files — both cooled within weeks.
Seattle resident Kiana Hall filmed the raccoon near a Ballard neighborhood Goodwill earlier this week. Videos related to Jimothy have drawn more than 10 million views on social media, KUOW reported. Local media outlets and major social media accounts shared the clips in quick succession, while fan art and parody posts spread online.
Pump.fun's official account reposted the token on X, pushing it in front of a larger trading audience. A dedicated subreddit and a wave of fan merchandise followed. The launch arrived during a broader Pump.fun trading rebound — the platform's share of profitable traders has climbed for four straight months.
It has not been confirmed whether there is any official connection between the raccoon or the original video uploader and the entity behind the token.
