Kweichow Moutai on May 11 rejected calls for a special shareholder sales channel, after confirming its first price increase under a new market-based pricing system. The move seeks to balance brand equity and market dynamics but leaves the timing of future increases uncertain.
"Fairness is a requirement not only from consumers but also from society," acting General Manager Wang Li said at the company's 2025 annual and 2026 first-quarter earnings call, adding that consumer rights must be equal for all.
In response to investor questions, Wang confirmed the company will not create a dedicated channel for its shareholders to purchase its sought-after liquor. Instead, future price adjustments will be guided by a "market-based, relatively stable" dynamic mechanism. This new system will analyze market supply, demand, channel inventory, and consumption trends to make what Wang called "scientific" and "fully researched" pricing decisions.
The decision to treat all buyers equally reinforces the brand's exclusive image but may disappoint investors who hoped for preferential treatment. The ambiguous timing of future price hikes under the new dynamic system creates uncertainty for revenue forecasts, a key metric for investors monitoring the impact of the recent adjustment.
A Symbiotic Channel Strategy
Wang also clarified that the company's market reforms are not intended to weaken its traditional distributor network. She described direct and social channels as a "community of common destiny" with distinct roles.
Direct channels act as a "stabilizer and balancer" to maintain market order and prevent speculation. Social channels, meanwhile, serve as an "amplifier and converter," tasked with expanding the brand's reach to more households.
The firm's commentary provides clarity on its pricing philosophy but leaves the timing of future price hikes ambiguous. Investors will be watching sales data from the company's direct and social channels to gauge the impact of the first price adjustment and anticipate the next.
