Nexentis Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: NXTS) rose more than 2 percent after its subsidiary, MitoCareX Bio Ltd., achieved its first drug discovery milestone since being acquired, generating an optimized molecule with improved properties for pre-clinical development.
"Achieving our first drug discovery milestone since the acquisition of MitoCareX, is a testament to the power of the MITOLINE® platform and the quality of MitoCareX's drug discovery team," David Palach, Chief Executive Officer of Nexentis Technologies, said in a statement.
The milestone is the creation of an "optimized hit molecule" that shows significant improvements in metabolic stability and other drug-like properties compared to an earlier compound, according to a company press release. The program targets hard-to-treat cancers and inflammatory metabolic diseases, markets projected by Mordor Intelligence to reach a combined value of over $630 billion by 2031.
While the scientific progress is a positive step, it comes against a challenging financial backdrop for Nexentis. The company, which has a market capitalization of just $3.32 million, has seen its stock fall 94 percent over the past year and recently executed a 1-for-7 reverse stock split. According to InvestingPro data, the company has a negative free cash flow of $4.56 million, indicating a high cash burn rate.
Targeting a Difficult Protein
The drug candidate is a small molecule designed to target a mitochondrial carrier protein in the SLC25 family. These proteins are crucial for moving molecules in and out of the mitochondria—the cell's power plant—but have been historically difficult to drug due to a lack of 3D structural models.
Nexentis's proprietary MITOLINE® platform was developed to overcome this bottleneck. The AI-powered algorithm generates reliable 3D models of these proteins, enabling virtual screening to identify potential drug compounds.
What's Next
The achievement of an optimized hit molecule moves the program meaningfully closer to selecting a lead candidate for formal pre-clinical trials. This marks a key validation of the company's acquisition of MitoCareX and its underlying technology platform.
For investors, the next catalyst will be the successful generation of a lead molecule and the subsequent initiation of pre-clinical studies. The progress will be a key test of whether the company's science can translate into value for shareholders, given its current financial position.
