NIO's new five-seat ES8 arrives as the EV maker navigates a RMB20,000 per-vehicle cost increase from rising raw material prices.

NIO's five-seat ES8, priced from RMB382,800 ($56,340), enters a growing market for large premium electric SUVs as the company absorbs a RMB20,000 per-vehicle cost increase from rising raw material prices.
"The cost per NIO ES8 vehicle has risen by nearly RMB20,000," William Li, founder, chairman and chief executive officer of NIO, said. "In theory, prices would need to rise by RMB30,000 to fully offset the increase."
The five-seat Executive Luxury trim starts at RMB382,800 for full purchase or RMB274,800 under NIO's battery-as-a-service plan, RMB24,000 below the three-row version. Deliveries began July 10. The model retains the ES8's 5,280-millimeter body with a 900-volt architecture, dual-motor all-wheel drive producing 520 kilowatts and a 655-kilometer CLTC range. Cargo capacity reaches 3,084 liters with the second row folded, the largest in the segment, NIO said.
The cost disclosure points to margin pressure at a time when NIO is trying to maintain competitive pricing in China's price-sensitive EV market. The company is working with supply chain partners to offset part of the impact and keep prices stable, Li said. NIO shares fell 2% on the launch day.
ES8 Sales Momentum Faces Cost Headwinds
The third-generation ES8 has been NIO's best-selling model, reaching 120,000 cumulative deliveries within 275 days of its September 2025 launch. It ranked first in China's large-SUV segment and the RMB400,000-plus price bracket for six consecutive months through June. But June deliveries eased to 8,969 units, down 21.85% from the prior month, as some buyers waited for the five-seat variant, Deutsche Bank analysts said.
The flagship ES9, launched in May at RMB498,000, delivered 8,595 units in its first full month, contributing 21% of NIO Inc's June total of 40,597 vehicles. The two flagship SUVs together accounted for 43% of group deliveries, pushing the NIO brand's average transaction price to RMB443,000 in June.
Cost Pressure and Competitive Landscape
Li's disclosure of a RMB20,000 cost increase per vehicle — with a theoretical RMB30,000 needed for full offset — comes as NIO competes with Li Auto's Li L8 and Huawei-backed Aito M8 in the family SUV segment. The five-seat ES8 also faces the Tesla Model YL, a six-seat variant of Tesla's best-selling China SUV launched in August.
NIO is pursuing a dense product cadence to boost sales and profitability. Deutsche Bank expects NIO to reach non-GAAP breakeven in the second quarter, driven by high-margin flagship models. The ES9's non-cancelable order backlog exceeds 40,000 units, the bank estimated.
NIO trades on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (9866.HK) and the New York Stock Exchange (NIO). The stock is down 6% year to date.
