Singapore, Singapore, May 5th, 2026 – SC Ventures, the fintech investment arm of Standard Chartered, has made a strategic investment in crypto capital markets firm GSR, becoming the company's first external strategic shareholder in more than a decade.
"Institutional digital asset markets are maturing rapidly, and the firms best positioned to lead will be those that combine deep capital markets expertise with trusted banking infrastructure," said Xin Song, CEO of GSR. "This partnership brings those strengths together, with tokenisation as a key starting point."
The deal, announced on May 5, 2026, makes SC Ventures a key partner in GSR's efforts to expand its advisory, liquidity, and asset management services. For SC Ventures, the investment builds on its existing relationship with GSR, which had previously invested in Libeara, a tokenization platform backed by the venture arm. The financial terms of the investment were not disclosed.
This investment signals deepening institutional commitment to the digital asset sector, focusing on building compliant and scalable infrastructure rather than speculative trading. As traditional finance seeks durable, on-chain yield sources, partnerships like this one are critical for connecting institutional capital with crypto-native markets, a trend also seen in venture investments into RWA-focused protocols.
Bridging Global Finance
The move comes as the convergence of traditional finance and crypto accelerates. While venture capital arms like Gate Ventures are pushing into Real-World Asset (RWA) tokenization to create "structurally resilient yield sources," established banking giants are now solidifying the foundational layer. Alex Manson, CEO of SC Ventures, stated the next phase of digital asset evolution "will be defined by the strength of infrastructure," reinforcing the focus on building institutional-grade ecosystems.
This partnership between a legacy financial institution and a crypto-native market maker provides a clear example of building bridges between the two worlds. Unlike the more volatile flows of sovereign wealth, which can be subject to geopolitical shifts as noted by recent analysis from the Council on Foreign Relations, direct investments by regulated financial players suggest a long-term structural integration of digital assets into the global financial system. The goal is to create robust infrastructure that can support deeper liquidity and more resilient market activity, ultimately paving the way for broader institutional adoption.
