SpaceX's Tuesday night Starlink launch from Vandenberg pushed the constellation past 10,900 working satellites as the West Coast absorbs a growing share of Falcon 9 traffic.
SpaceX launched 24 Starlink satellites from Vandenberg Space Force Base on Tuesday night, extending a West Coast surge that now includes three Falcon 9 missions in seven days.
"The West Coast is absorbing a growing share of Falcon 9 traffic as Cape Canaveral's rate has dipped," SpaceflightNow reported in its live coverage of the mission. The launch was the 71st operational Starlink delivery of 2026.
The Falcon 9 lifted off from SLC-4E at 7 p.m. Pacific, deploying 24 satellites to low-Earth orbit. The first-stage booster, on its fifth flight, landed on the droneship Of Course I Still Love You in the Pacific Ocean. The constellation now stands at 12,692 launched, 10,939 in orbit, and 10,923 working, with 1,753 total decayed.
SpaceX shares in secondary markets rose after the launch, Barron's reported. The company has two more Vandenberg missions scheduled this week: USSF-366, a national security payload for the U.S. Space Force, on Saturday, and another Starlink batch Tuesday, Aug. 18.
Vandenberg's Three-Launch Week
The Vandenberg tempo has picked up as Cape Canaveral's rate has dipped, a shift driven by Starship infrastructure work on the East Coast. The Aug. 8 Starlink 17-38 mission was the company's 50th West Coast launch of 2026, with booster B1093 completing its 16th flight and landing on the droneship. B1093 entered the fleet in April 2025 and has carried a mix of payloads including two SDA Tranche 1 Transport Layer missions, the Transporter-16 rideshare, and 12 prior Starlink batches.
The upcoming USSF-366 mission on Saturday will use a booster on its 18th flight, carrying a national security payload for the U.S. Space Force. A backup window opens Sunday at 2:38 p.m. Pacific. The third launch, scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 18, will carry another 24 Starlink satellites aboard a booster making its 12th flight, which previously flew Sentinel-6B, Twilight, NROL-172, Transporter-17, and seven Starlink missions.
SpaceX is also reconfiguring its existing constellation during 2026. The company plans to lower approximately 4,400 satellites from around 550 kilometers to roughly 480 kilometers, a move designed to reduce space debris risk and improve orbital safety, according to statements from SpaceX leadership.
Eight Starlink satellites appear in the current SOCRATES high-probability conjunction list, though none cross the high-risk threshold. Five Starlink vehicles carry active reentry predictions from 18th Space Defense Squadron tracking. The gap between in-orbit and working counts holds steady at 16, a small number of recently deployed units still raising orbit or undergoing checkout.
For investors tracking SpaceX's private market valuation, the sustained launch cadence demonstrates operational reliability that underpins the company's Starlink revenue growth. The constellation's expansion to 10,923 working satellites supports the broadband service's global coverage claims, a key metric for secondary market pricing. With three launches in seven days from Vandenberg alone, SpaceX is showing it can maintain the deployment pace needed to complete its constellation reconfiguration by year-end.
