Tesla China's first cash incentive in about 19 months pushed Model 3 and Model Y starting prices to record lows and pulled buyers into showrooms within hours, as more than ten automakers launched September promotions that deepen a price war across the world's largest auto market.
"Phones are blowing up, we're trending on social media — everyone coming in now is looking to order a car," a manager at a Beijing Tesla experience store said, describing the morning of Sept. 7 after the policy was published.
The incentive, announced Sept. 7, pays 5,000 yuan ($750) on the full Model 3 inventory line and 10,000 yuan ($1,500) on the full Model Y line to customers who order and take delivery by Sept. 30, with select configurations eligible for an additional 8,000 yuan insurance subsidy. Stacked with a five-year zero-interest financing program, the Model 3 starts at 222,500 yuan ($33,000) and the Model Y at 253,500 yuan ($38,000) — both the lowest entry prices either line has carried. The cash is deducted from the final payment; official sticker prices are unchanged. One Beijing store had locked more than 20 orders by the afternoon of Sept. 7, with several Model 3 Long Range units claimed, according to National Business Daily.
The timing is set by the Shanghai plant's quarterly rhythm. Deliveries cannot be processed around the National Day holiday, and once the factory rolls into the next quarter, export orders take priority, leaving September as the main window for domestic handovers. Tesla's last comparable program ran from Nov. 25, 2024 through Jan. 31, 2025 and covered only select Model Y inventory.
Tesla's China retail sales fell 12% through July
The incentive answers a demand problem rather than a capacity one. China Passenger Car Association data show Tesla China's cumulative retail sales from January through July 2026 reached about 266,000 units, down 12.44% from a year earlier, with Model 3 volume down 32.66%. The BMW Neue Klasse iX3 opened for pre-orders at 269,900 yuan ($40,000) and the SAIC Audi AUDI E7X launched at a limited-time 269,800 yuan ($40,000), both inside the Model Y's core price band, while Xiaomi, Li Auto, AITO, Zeekr and Onvo keep eroding Tesla's former default-option status with denser specifications and faster launch cycles.
Rivals matched the move within days. Leapmotor's "Million Acceleration" autumn campaign, launched Sept. 1, offers benefits up to 15,680 yuan ($2,300) on the C-series and up to 19,680 yuan ($2,900) on the B-series and Lafa5. Zeekr is offering a 10,000 yuan insurance subsidy on the 8X with a choice of 20% down and five-year zero interest or a 15,000 yuan ($2,200) trade-in bonus with two-year zero interest. Xiaomi's SU7 and YU7 carry either three-year zero-interest financing or a 6,000 yuan insurance subsidy, while the SU7 Ultra adds a benefits package valued at 49,000 yuan ($7,300). XPeng's MONA M03 lets buyers lock benefits worth up to 22,400 yuan ($3,300) against a 5,000 yuan deposit.
Geely's "Smart Engine Golden Autumn" campaign offers trade-in subsidies up to 20,000 yuan ($3,000), with the Xingrui i-HEV available from 82,700 yuan ($12,000) after trade-in. GAC Aion's N60 is priced from 103,800 yuan ($15,000) after renewal discounts, and FAW Toyota is offering 18,000 yuan ($2,700) in cash benefits on the RAV4, stackable with trade-in subsidies.
Luxury brands cut deepest, with 187,800 yuan off an Audi Q6
The steepest discounts came from the premium end. SAIC Audi priced the A7L from 262,800 yuan ($39,000) in September, a 155,900 yuan ($23,000) reduction from its 418,700 yuan ($62,000) sticker, and the Q6 from 279,800 yuan ($42,000), down 187,800 yuan ($28,000) from 467,600 yuan ($70,000). Volvo's XC70 carries a 411,900 yuan ($61,000) list price but a September limited-time price of 229,900 yuan ($34,000); after a 15,000 yuan monthly discount and a 15,000 yuan national subsidy, the lowest effective purchase price falls to 199,900 yuan ($30,000), more than 210,000 yuan ($31,000) below list.
The backdrop is a demand slump that promotions cannot fix on their own. CPCA data show cumulative retail sales of 11.799 million units from January through August 2026, down 20% year over year, with most automakers having completed only 40% to 60% of their annual targets. China's auto manufacturing sector posted an operating revenue profit margin of just 3.8% in the first half, so every yuan of incentive comes straight out of per-vehicle profit.
For investors, the September wave sets up a delivery-versus-margin test that resolves when quarterly numbers land in early October. Tesla's China volumes should improve sequentially into the Sept. 30 deadline, but the discounting is funded from gross margin, and the same arithmetic applies to Leapmotor, Zeekr, XPeng, Geely and the joint ventures that matched it. Buyers comparing offers should check inventory availability, delivery timing and financing eligibility, since several limited-time benefits are conditional.
