Toncoin will rename to Gram on June 15 after 81.22% of TON holders approved the rebrand in a governance vote that closed June 8.
"The change revives the original token name from Telegram's 2018 TON whitepaper, which was abandoned after the US Securities and Exchange Commission halted Telegram's $1.7 billion token sale in 2020," the TON Foundation said in the proposal.
The ticker will switch from TON to GRAM at 12:00 UTC on June 15. No token swap, migration, or claim process is required — existing balances, staking positions, and smart contracts remain unchanged. Exchanges and wallets are expected to update trading pairs and interfaces by June 22, with a three-month transition period displaying "Gram (prev. Toncoin)."
The rebrand arrives as Telegram deepens its role in the network, becoming its largest validator and driving upgrades that increased transaction throughput tenfold and reduced fees roughly sixfold, according to the foundation. Toncoin traded at $1.70 at the time of writing, down 3% in the past 24 hours and 11% over the past week, CoinGecko data shows.
The blockchain itself will continue operating as The Open Network (TON). Only the token's name, ticker, and icon are changing. Telegram founder Pavel Durov publicly advocated for the rename in recent weeks, framing it as part of a broader "Make TON Great Again" initiative focused on technical performance and protocol-level infrastructure improvements.
The proposal was submitted by Telegram as a verified organization and voted on via the TON Vote platform using open-source smart contracts. Voting power was determined by participants' TON balances at a snapshot taken May 31.
History suggests token rebrands rarely produce sustained rallies on their own. While short-term speculative volatility may occur around the June 15 effective date, the name change does not alter the token's utility, supply, or network fundamentals. Any sustained price appreciation would likely require stronger catalysts such as Telegram ecosystem growth or broader market tailwinds.
