World Liberty Financial postponed its Maldives resort token sale as the Iran war disrupts regional travel, with WLFI down 88.5% from its September peak.
The token, planned for sale next year, was designed to give investors a fixed return and a share of revenue from loans financing the Trump-branded resort, according to a Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the matter. World Liberty tapped real-world asset platform Securitize in February to represent loan interests tied to the resort's development as a digital token tradeable onchain. The offering was structured to securitize loan claims used to finance the resort's construction, targeting accredited investors under US securities rules.
Dar Global CEO Ziad El Chaar said the UK developer continues to review development and launch schedules for its global projects in line with market conditions, regulatory requirements and long-term strategic goals. The resort is planned to have about 80 luxury beach and overwater villas, with Dar Global holding other Trump-branded projects in the UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. El Chaar added that the company looks forward to sharing updates on its joint initiatives with the Trump Organization.
The delay shows how geopolitical disruption can stall tokenized real-world asset offerings, a sector World Liberty has been expanding into beyond real estate, including commodities like oil and gas. The protocol's native token WLFI rose 2.7% on the news before giving back all gains and returning to parity. A new launch date has not been set, and World Liberty declined to comment through a spokesperson.
The postponement raises questions about the practical benefits of tokenizing real estate debt versus traditional investment methods, even as institutional players like BlackRock-backed Securitize show interest in this emerging asset class. For investors, the delay shows how dependent such offerings are on geopolitical stability — a factor that can shift quickly and leave even well-backed projects stranded. The resort itself remains under construction, with the 80 villas not yet open and no timeline for when the token sale might proceed.
