Zoox Quadruples San Francisco Service Area
Amazon's autonomous vehicle subsidiary, Zoox, initiated a significant expansion on March 24, 2026, intensifying its challenge to established robotaxi operators. The company is quadrupling its San Francisco service area to include the eastern half of the city, adding neighborhoods such as the Marina District, North Beach, and Chinatown. In Las Vegas, Zoox will now service high-traffic destinations including the Sphere, the Las Vegas Convention Center, and T-Mobile Arena, building on its initial free-ride service along the Strip.
This expansion is part of a broader national rollout strategy. Zoox is preparing to launch services in Austin, Texas, and Miami, where it has been testing its vehicles since 2024. The company confirmed that waitlists for rides in both cities will open later this year. To date, Zoox has transported over 350,000 riders across nearly 2 million autonomous miles, though all trips remain free pending regulatory approval for fare collection.
Waymo Maintains Lead With 1,500+ Vehicle Fleet
Zoox's growth directly confronts market leader Waymo, an Alphabet subsidiary, and Tesla's developing autonomous network. While Zoox's expansion is notable, its operational scale remains modest in comparison. The company, acquired by Amazon for $1.3 billion in 2020, operates a fleet of approximately 100 purpose-built vehicles that lack traditional controls like steering wheels or pedals.
By contrast, Waymo commands the market with a fleet of over 1,500 vehicles, primarily retrofitted Jaguars, and had accumulated 170 million autonomous miles by December 2025. Waymo already operates in nine major U.S. cities, giving it a substantial lead in data collection and market penetration. The global autonomous vehicle market is projected to exceed $214 billion by 2030, creating a high-stakes environment for these competitors.
Uber Partnership Provides Key Distribution Channel
To bridge the gap with its larger rivals, Zoox is leveraging a strategic partnership with Uber to accelerate customer acquisition. Beginning this summer, Zoox vehicles will become available for booking through the Uber app in Las Vegas, with a planned launch in Los Angeles in mid-2027. This integration provides Zoox immediate access to Uber's extensive user base, mitigating the high costs of building a standalone consumer platform.
This platform-based strategy is central to Uber's role in the autonomous era. The ride-hailing giant has secured over 20 partnerships with AV developers, including Waymo and Nuro, positioning itself as the primary aggregator for autonomous rides. By connecting various AV fleets to its existing demand network, Uber aims to facilitate utilization and become a critical infrastructure layer for the entire robotaxi industry.
