SHEIN-W (00625.HK) fell 8.62 percent to HKD38.38 on Sept 4, extending its slide to nearly 21 percent below the HKD48.56 IPO price. Short selling reached HK$43.04 million, a 29.697 percent ratio of total turnover, which amounted to HK$324 million.
Hang Seng Indexes Company said SHEIN-W meets the Fast Entry Rule of the Hang Seng Composite Index and will be added to the Hang Seng Composite Index, the Hang Seng Composite Industry Index - Consumer Discretionary, the Hang Seng Composite LargeCap Index, and the Hang Seng Composite LargeCap & MidCap Index after market close on Sept 14. All changes take effect Sept 15.
The index additions arrive as the fast-fashion retailer trades well below its listing price, with short sellers accounting for nearly 30 percent of turnover. Inclusion in the composite indices could broaden demand for the stock as index-tracking funds adjust their constituent holdings to reflect the new additions.
SHEIN-W's decline below its IPO price comes despite the company's scale as one of the world's largest fast-fashion retailers. The stock's inclusion in the Hang Seng Composite Index under the Fast Entry Rule reflects its market capitalization meeting the threshold for index membership, even as price weakness persists. The additions span both broad-market and sector-specific indices, giving the stock exposure to a wider pool of institutional investors tracking the Hang Seng family of benchmarks.
