Bitcoin exchange reserves have broken above the 200-day simple moving average for the first time in years, shifting the supply narrative from scarcity toward distribution.

Bitcoin exchange reserves broke above the 200-day simple moving average, ending a two-year downtrend as BTC traded near $63,010.
The supply shift challenges the long-standing scarcity narrative, with more Bitcoin becoming liquid on centralized exchanges, according to on-chain data reported by DailyCoin.
The breakout marks the first significant supply-side shift in years. If exchange reserves continue to climb and whale inflows increase, the bearish outlook could intensify, potentially driving prices lower and testing current support levels. This comes as market sentiment remains deeply entrenched in fear.
The evolving liquidity dynamics may test the resilience of current support levels, making this a critical period for market participants. With US inflation data due this week, the coming sessions may determine whether accumulation can pull the recovery wider or whether distribution pressures dominate.
The reserve breakout sits against a backdrop of conflicting on-chain signals. CryptoQuant data show addresses holding more than 10,000 BTC accumulated 46,420 BTC over a 60-day period through Aug. 9 — the highest reading since March 15 and nearly double the mid-March peak of 23,238 BTC. Santiment separately counted 90 wallets holding at least 10,000 BTC, a six-month high.
Institutional demand also strengthened last week. Spot Bitcoin ETFs drew about $853.54 million in the week ending Aug. 7, their best week since April 17, according to SoSoValue. But those flows reversed to a net outflow on Monday, an early sign the inflow streak may be losing momentum.
Glassnode reported that active addresses, transfer volume, and fee generation have drifted toward lower bounds. Profitability has improved only modestly, and realized losses still exceed realized profits on-chain. The firm described the market as a transitional recovery that has yet to broaden into a full expansion.
Liquidity remains thin. One CryptoQuant analyst noted monthly trading volume on Binance fell about 45 percent year-over-year in July, while OKX dropped roughly 57 percent. Shrinking depth lets modest flows swing prices sharply.
Another CryptoQuant analyst flagged a bearish top formation, with a downside target near $51,336, about 21 percent below current levels.
The exchange reserve breakout adds a layer of complexity to Bitcoin's market dynamics. With more BTC available on exchanges, the market may face heightened selling pressure, potentially impacting price stability. The move is noteworthy in a market environment already gripped by fear, which could intensify the impact of this liquidity shift.
With US inflation data due this week, the coming sessions may show whether whale accumulation can pull the recovery wider or whether the reserve breakout marks the beginning of a distribution phase. Traders should monitor exchange reserve levels closely, as they could indicate increased volatility or a potential shift in market structure.
