Bitcoin and Ethereum posted their strongest daily gains in months as Trump's crypto-bill initiative and bond market turbulence drove investors toward hard assets.
Bitcoin rose 6% to $69,000 on Aug. 20 as Ethereum gained 18.5% to $2,266.79, the strongest daily move for both assets in months.
"Investors interpreted the move as a subtle form of quantitative easing that could weaken the dollar and boost scarce assets such as Bitcoin," Matt Mena, senior strategist at crypto research firm 21Shares, said.
Short sellers were forced to cover roughly $1.5 billion in positions, while U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted about $1 billion in inflows during the first two weeks of August. Ethereum broke decisively above its $1,870-$1,950 range, with support now at $2,150-$2,200 and resistance at $2,350-$2,400.
The rally follows months of selling pressure that left Bitcoin roughly 40% below its October 2025 high near $115,000. Trump's meeting with crypto executives at the White House and the CLARITY Act debate point to potential regulatory clarity, which could sustain inflows into digital assets.
The U.S. Treasury's plan to double purchases of older, long-term government bonds triggered the initial move, with investors reading it as a form of quantitative easing that weakens the dollar. The iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) gained about 6% on Aug. 19, while the fund remains down 23.9% year-to-date. Ethereum's market cap stands at $228.16 billion with 24-hour trading volume of $5.92 billion, per CoinGecko data as of 10:09 UTC.
Ethereum's breakout was more pronounced. The token moved from a tight $1,870-$1,950 range that held for weeks, with CoinGecko showing ETH at $2,266.79, up 18.50% in 24 hours and 20.70% over the past week. The move marks the most significant momentum shift since the June-July recovery began, with the 50-day simple moving average at $1,862.66 now acting as support.
Trump's meeting with crypto executives and top federal regulators at the White House added a second tailwind. The proposed framework could ease certain federal securities requirements for qualifying crypto companies, streamlining token issuance and capital-raising activities. Lawmakers continue to debate the CLARITY Act, which would provide regulatory clarity for the industry.
Crypto-linked equities rallied alongside the tokens. Strategy Inc. (MSTR), Coinbase (COIN), Robinhood (HOOD), Marathon Digital (MARA), and Core Scientific (CLSK) all broke higher on Aug. 19-20.
Zach Pandl, head of research at Grayscale, said the rebound could indicate Bitcoin has moved beyond the most severe phase of its bear market. He pointed to growing fiscal pressures — the U.S. national debt is expected to reach $40 trillion before the end of August — as a potential driver of demand for hard assets.
Bitcoin's RSI sits at 92.63, indicating overbought conditions that could trigger a short-term pullback. For Ethereum, a hold above $2,200 would confirm the breakout's validity, opening a path toward $2,600-$2,700. A drop back below risks a retest of $1,950-$2,050.
