BYD's third-gen Tang SUV delivers 850 km range with 5-minute fast charging, targeting Q4 launch.

BYD's third-generation Tang SUV, unveiled at the Chengdu Auto Show on Friday, brings 850 km of range and 5-minute fast charging to the Dynasty lineup as the company seeks to reverse sliding flagship sales.
The model is positioned as an 8-series flagship in BYD's Dynasty lineup, Dynasty sales head Lu Tian said at the show, joining the 9-series Da Tang to form a dual-flagship SUV lineup.
The five-seat SUV measures 5,045 mm in length with a 2,950 mm wheelbase and second-row legroom exceeding 1,000 mm, with seat back angles up to 130 degrees. It debuts BYD's "Star Dual Screen" cockpit and uses the second-generation Blade Battery with pack options of 88.682 kWh and 105.792 kWh. At normal temperatures, the battery charges from 10 percent to 70 percent in about 5 minutes and reaches 97 percent in 9 minutes. In extreme cold, charging takes about 3 minutes longer. The model comes standard with God's Eye B driver assistance featuring one LiDAR, and BYD's DiSus-A intelligent air suspension with dual-chamber air suspension.
Refreshing the Tang family is critical for BYD. Tang series sales fell to 5,529 units in January 2026 from 6,590 a year earlier, and monthly volumes through June remained below 10,000 — a sharp drop from the 19,012 units sold in May 2025. The third-generation Tang, set to go on sale in the fourth quarter, will compete in China's premium EV SUV segment against models from NIO, Li Auto and XPeng.
The sales decline is stark when viewed against 2025. Tang series deliveries peaked at 19,012 units in May 2025, then fell to 8,860 in August and 10,129 in December. Through the first half of 2026, monthly volumes averaged roughly 6,900 units — less than half the 2025 peak. July 2026 showed a recovery to 13,535 units, likely reflecting anticipation of the new model.
BYD has been reshaping its flagship lineup since last year. The Da Tang EV went on sale June 17 with a starting price of 239,900 yuan ($35,370) and a CLTC range of up to 950 km. Deliveries surpassed 10,000 units about one month after launch, according to CnEVPost. The company also unveiled the Da Han EV at the Chengdu show, opening pre-sales for the Dynasty 9-series sedan with a range of up to 1,008 km.
The second-generation Blade Battery and megawatt-level flash charging technology are central to BYD's broader strategy. The company plans to build 20,000 flash charging stations across China by the end of 2026, including 18,000 urban stations and 2,000 highway stations, according to BYD chairman Wang Chuanfu. The technology is also being pushed downmarket — BYD said flash charging will be applied to models priced at 150,000 yuan ($22,120) in 2026.
The third-generation Tang's charging capability — 70 percent in 5 minutes at room temperature — puts it ahead of most rivals in China's premium EV segment. NIO's battery-swap model takes about 2 minutes and 24 seconds for a full swap, while CATL is expanding its own ultra-fast charging through the Shenxing battery. BYD's approach differs by combining high energy density with ultra-fast charging, a combination the company says was previously difficult to achieve simultaneously.
BYD's overall NEV sales reached 419,211 units in July 2026, up from 344,296 a year earlier. The company's battery installations in China totaled 14.26 GWh in July, holding a 19.23 percent market share, according to CABIA data.
The third-generation Tang's launch in Q4 will test whether BYD can reclaim momentum in the premium SUV segment. With the Da Tang already exceeding 10,000 deliveries in its first month and the Da Han EV entering pre-sales, BYD is betting that a refreshed Dynasty lineup can sustain its growth trajectory into 2027. BYD shares trade on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX: 1211) and Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SZSE: 002594). The company's July NEV sales marked a 21.8 percent year-over-year increase, and the Dynasty refresh could provide additional upside as flash charging technology rolls out across the lineup.
