Wall Street futures edged sideways Tuesday as investors braced for earnings from Tesla Inc. and Alphabet Inc., while Bitcoin breached $67,000 for the first time in three weeks.
S&P 500 futures held near 7,450 as traders awaited quarterly results from Tesla and Alphabet, with Bitcoin crossing $67,000 and Asian markets delivering mixed signals.
"The market is in a holding pattern until we get these prints," said Peter Tuz, president of Chase Investment Counsel. "Tesla and Alphabet will set the tone for the entire tech sector this earnings season."
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.56% to 51,856, while the S&P 500 edged up 0.09% to 7,451.01 and the Nasdaq 100 gained 0.14% to 28,551. Intel Corp. led the Dow with a 2.3% advance, followed by Microsoft Corp. up 1.8% and Alphabet Inc. rising 1.4%. On the losing side, Tesla Inc. dropped 2.7% and Apple Inc. slipped 1.6%. The Cboe Volatility Index eased 0.3% to 18.47, remaining below its 12-month average as options markets priced in relatively contained swings.
In Asia, South Korea's Kospi surged more than 5%, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index slipped. The divergence reflected regional differences in exposure to the tech earnings cycle and geopolitical developments in the Middle East, where Yemen's Houthis imposed a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia, pushing crude prices higher. The blockade threatens oil shipments through the Bab el-Mandeb strait, a chokepoint for global crude flows.
The earnings reports due this week carry outsized weight for the Nasdaq, which has rallied 23% year-to-date largely on AI-driven enthusiasm. A miss from either Tesla or Alphabet could test the market's tolerance for premium valuations, while a beat may extend the rally into August. Alphabet's shares rose 2.9% on Monday after the company announced a Gemini-integrated server chip designed to improve AI efficiency, raising expectations for its cloud division performance.
Bitcoin Breaks $67K as Crypto Tracks Risk Assets
Bitcoin rose above $67,000 for the first time since late June, gaining 0.8% on the day. The move came as traders rotated into risk assets ahead of the earnings season, with the largest cryptocurrency tracking equity index futures higher. Open interest across Bitcoin futures rose alongside the price, suggesting new longs rather than short covering drove the breakout. The $67,000 level had acted as resistance since late June, and a sustained move above it could open the path toward $70,000.
What Investors Are Watching Next
The Federal Reserve's interest rate path remains a key variable. With inflation at 3.5% and the fed funds rate at 3.75%, traders are pricing in a potential cut in September, though strong labor market data could delay that timeline. Treasury yields edged higher Tuesday, with the 10-year note yielding around 4.2%, adding pressure to rate-sensitive sectors. The next major event for markets will be the Fed's July policy meeting, followed by the July jobs report due in early August.
