China's Long March 7A rocket exploded 85 seconds after liftoff, sinking aerospace-linked HK stocks and stalling LandSpace's Zhuque-3 launch.
Aerospace-linked HK stocks slid after China's Long March 7A rocket exploded during a satellite launch, with Goldwind (金風科技, 02208.HK) falling 6.55 percent to HKD10.41 and TOPNC (07688.HK) dropping 2.93 percent to HKD16.21.
"The failure raises questions about the reliability of China's workhorse YF-100 engine, which powers most of the country's modern rocket fleet," said Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian, who confirmed from launch video that the rocket was completely destroyed at low altitude and velocity.
The Long March 7A, carrying the ChinaSat-4B communications satellite, exploded approximately 85 seconds after liftoff from the Wenchang Space Launch Site in Hainan at 8:02 p.m. Beijing time on Monday. The vehicle's 18th operational flight ended in a fireball over the South China Sea, destroying both the rocket and its payload. Xinhua confirmed the failure roughly three hours after liftoff, stating the cause was under investigation.
The incident has broader implications. The YF-100 engine under investigation powers boosters on the Long March 5 rocket already stacked at Wenchang for the Chang'e 7 lunar south pole mission, with a possible launch window around Aug. 24. LandSpace's Zhuque-3 Y2 rocket, scheduled for launch Tuesday morning, was postponed, according to Chinese media outlet Yicai.
Goldwind, which holds approximately 4.14 percent of LandSpace through its subsidiary Jianghan Assets and ranks as the sixth-largest shareholder, opened down 5.21 percent before bottoming at HKD10.08. Turnover reached HKD245 million. TOPNC opened down 2.99 percent, hitting a low of HKD16 before recovering slightly to HKD16.21 with turnover of HKD18.2 million.
The Long March 7A failure is China's fourth launch failure of 2026 in 56 attempts, following the Long March 3B in January, the Ceres-2 solid-rocket debut in January, and the Tianlong-3 debut in April. None of those prior failures involved the YF-100 engine family, making Monday's the first with fleet-wide implications.
YF-100 Engine Under Scrutiny
The YF-100 engine, designed by the Academy of Aerospace Liquid Propulsion Technology, is used across six distinct rocket types spanning five families: the Long March 5, 6, 6A, 6C, 7, 7A, 8, 8A, 10, and 12 series. The failure occurred during the joint burn phase when all six engines fire simultaneously at maximum thrust, producing approximately 7,200 kilonewtons.
The 2020 Long March 7A failure was traced to liquid oxygen cavitation in a booster feed line, and the vehicle was grounded for roughly a year. The January 2026 Long March 3B failure, which involved the shared YF-75 third-stage engine, grounded both the Long March 3B and Long March 7A for approximately five months.
Chang'e 7 at Risk
The Long March 5 rocket for the Chang'e 7 lunar mission, already positioned at Wenchang, uses four YF-100-powered boosters. CASC must decide whether to clear the boosters before the primary launch window around Aug. 24 or wait for the investigation to conclude. The mission carries international scientific payloads, making any delay a matter of international consequence.
China targeted approximately 140 orbital launches for 2026, a 52 percent increase over the 93 missions completed in 2025. The Long March 7A is the primary vehicle for geostationary transfer orbit missions, and its grounding creates a backlog for high-orbit payloads, with the aging Long March 3B as the only near-term alternative.
